Beyond the Publication
Tools, services and opportunities that support scholarly publishing and open science at the University of Warsaw. Here you will find information useful for journal editors, authors, reviewers and readers.
Developing and running your journal
DOI, similarity checking, citations, metadata updates and programmes supporting journal development.
DOI – a persistent identifier for your publication
Publications made available in PubliSphere can be assigned DOIs registered with Crossref. A DOI gives a publication a persistent, unique identifier that does not depend on its current web address.
For publications hosted in PubliSphere, the metadata required for DOI registration can be prepared and submitted using data already in the system, so the editorial team does not have to enter it into Crossref again.

DOI rules at the University of Warsaw →Similarity Check / iThenticate
Editorial teams of journals that use DOIs under the University of Warsaw's agreement with Crossref can use Similarity Check / iThenticate.
The system compares a text against a database of publications and highlights similar passages that need checking. A similarity report is not an automatic finding of plagiarism – it is a tool that supports editorial judgement.

Warsaw University Press information →Reference lists and Crossref Cited-by
PubliSphere can deposit publication reference lists with Crossref together with their metadata. This allows Crossref to identify links between publications and recognise which articles cite a given text.
Once Cited-by is enabled, citation data can be retrieved automatically and displayed alongside the publication. The editorial team does not need to update this information manually.
Want to enable Cited-by?
Contact Warsaw University Press or the PubliSphere administrator.
Crossmark – is this the current version?
Crossmark lets readers check whether a publication is still current, and whether a correction, update, retraction or other notice about its status has been issued.
For journals hosted in PubliSphere, Crossmark can be handled technically at platform level, so the editorial team does not need to build its own integration with Crossref.
Updating metadata in Crossref
A DOI never changes, but the data associated with the publication can be updated.
Typical situations:
- a change of article URL or migration of the journal to another platform,
- a change of publisher or a journal takeover,
- corrections to author details, title, volume, issue or publication date,
- adding or correcting ORCID iDs,
- adding licence, funding, reference or other metadata.
For publications hosted in PubliSphere, these changes can be submitted to Crossref through the system.
DOIs for archival publications
DOIs can also be assigned to older articles and back issues of a journal. For archives hosted in PubliSphere, the data required for registration can be taken from the metadata already on the platform.
I.2.1 – Journal Enhancement Programme
Editorial teams of University of Warsaw journals can apply for funding for activities that develop the journal and increase its visibility.
Support may cover, among other things, language editing and proofreading, translation, digitisation of back issues, preparing applications to indexing databases, promotion, development of websites and editorial systems, and DOIs.
Indexing your journal in EBSCO
Being included in EBSCO databases makes a journal's articles easier to find for researchers who use library and discovery systems.

Getting credit for your peer review
Science
Web of Science Reviewer Recognition
Web of Science lets you record completed reviews in your researcher profile without disclosing their confidential content or breaching the journal's anonymity rules.
Your peer review activity can also be linked to your ORCID record.
Web of Science Reviewer Recognition Service →More information alongside each publication
Usage statistics, citations and information that helps you check whether a text is up to date.
Publication statistics
Publications can display the number of views and downloads. These figures complement citation data and show interest in a text even before the first citations appear.
Citations shown with the article
Information about publications that cite an article can be retrieved from Crossref and displayed right next to the text.
Is this the current version?
Crossmark lets you check whether a text has been corrected, updated or retracted since publication, or whether any other notice about its status has been issued.
Annotations and discussion on the text
Hypothesis lets readers annotate specific passages of a publication and discuss the text right where it is. It can be used, for example, in teaching and for shared reading of publications.
Altmetrics – attention beyond citations
Altmetric badges will show how a publication is being discussed online – in news media, policy documents, blogs, social media and reference managers – complementing traditional citation data.
